The baseball winter meetings are concluding in Las Vegas and the hot stove has been rather quiet. No block buster deals or free agent signings as of yet however teams are positioning themselves for the winter push. The two big free agent names out there this year are Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. The Yankees have expressed interest in Machado to fill their short stop position until Didi Gregorious returns from Tommy John surgery. Machado can play third then and Miguel Andujar, the excellent rookie from 2018, can move elsewhere (he’s struggled making the throw from third to first). Harper doesn’t fit in a crowded Yankee outfield but could play first or platoon in the outfield and at DH. The Yankees need pitching, and they haven’t really solved that problem. You can have all the bats you want but in a playoff series you need shut down arms (see Boston, Houston, etc)
Look for the Yankees to sign Machado and then make a push for a big name pitcher. I would stay away from Machado and sign the recently released SS Troy Tulowitzki to fill in until Didi returns. You can get Tulo cheap. I would then sign Harper. His left hand power is perfect for Yankee stadium. I would then package Brett Gardner and Greg Byrd and a minor leaguer in a deal to the Mets for Noah Syndergard.
Just a thought!
